Walmart.com is a fine first novel. It s a bildungsroman in a unique setting, a Northumberland monastery around the end of the 7th Century. Author William Peak seems to have done meticulous research into the period, but his story unfolds naturally and without pretense. The reader never gets the feeling that it s an academic treatise.
